NEW YORK – In an interview with CNBC’s TechCheck this week, Uber Technologies, Inc. Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi told Carl Quintanilla that the delivery platform could start delivering cannabis once the plant becomes legal at the federal level.

“When the road is clear for cannabis, when federal laws come into play, we’re absolutely going to take a look at [providing cannabis delivery],” Khosrowshahi said. “But right now, with grocery, with food, with alcohol, et cetera, we see so much opportunity out there and we’re going to focus on the opportunity at hand.”

Cannabis would not be the company’s first foray into adult consumer products. In February 2021, the company acquired Drizly, the leading on-demand alcohol marketplace in the United States, for a cool $1.1 billion in stock and cash.

“Wherever you want to go and whatever you need to get, our goal at Uber is to make people’s lives a little bit easier. That’s why we’ve been branching into new categories like groceries, prescriptions and now, alcohol,” Khosrowshahi said at the time. “By bringing Drizly into the Uber family, we can accelerate that trajectory by exposing Drizly to the Uber audience and expanding its geographic presence into our global footprint in the years ahead.”

While it remains to be seen when cannabis will become federally legal, a recent Gallup poll indicated public support for legalization reached an all-time high in 2020. Indicating perhaps, that we may see Uber cannabis delivery in the not-too-distant future.
