Filtrona, the global independent market leader in the design, testing and manufacture of special filter and pre-roll solutions, has brought its expertise to a new market with the launch of Cannatrona, its dedicated division serving the cannabis and hemp market.

The Cannatrona brand made a successful November debut at MJBizCon 2023 in Las Vegas. Aiming to make waves in a rapidly emerging sector, the Cannatrona business supplies innovation-driven filter tips, mouthpieces and pre-roll solutions for cannabis and hemp products, alongside scientific services.

Though the businesses operate independently, Cannatrona hits the ground running with Filtrona’s vast knowledge and expertise across the global tobacco product industry. The business has also built a strong senior leadership team to guide its initial market penetration and growth, including appointing the experienced Jeni Sperry as Head of New Business Development.

Robert Pye, CEO of Filtrona, comments: “The cannabis and hemp industry is seeing rapid expansion, but the regulatory landscape is also shifting at speed. What businesses in this field need is a partner with a proven track record of quality, innovation, brand development and compliance, and that’s exactly what Cannatrona offers. With the company’s launch, we’re looking to propel the sector to even greater heights in a transformative and meaningful way.

“Filtrona and Cannatrona are two entities that operate as distinct businesses, but naturally we are able to align our knowledge and expertise when it comes to compliant next-gen products that delight users. This includes state-of-the-art production facilities and extensive scientific services, as well as meeting stringent FDA regulations. Our customer-focused approach to business has made Filtrona a go-to name in the tobacco product sector, and these values are well-reflected in Cannatrona. It may be a new name in the market, but it’s backed by a rich history. We look forward to showing how that experience really does make a world of difference.”

Jeni Sperry, Head of New Business Development at Cannatrona, adds: “In any growing market, new businesses can be found all along the supply chain. However, Cannatrona has something that the rest don’t, and that’s the century-long experience of Filtrona, one of the world’s leading special filter brands. For cannabis and hemp product innovators, we’re not just introducing filter tip and mouthpiece products to the market, we’re bringing expertise, innovation and a very bright future.”

“As legislation evolves around the globe, we’re staying ahead of the curve with premium pre-roll solutions. We’ve hit the ground running on our exciting journey, and with the backing of Filtrona, this is just the beginning.”

Our history

Our filter business has a rich heritage as an innovation leader. Following the development of the first patented filter in 1924 by Boris Aivaz, Moritz Bunzl began to manufacture filters commercially in the late 1920s. The first dedicated facility was established in Jarrow, UK in 1948. Bunzl grew internationally by establishing a presence in the US in the 1905s and expanding into Asia in the 1970s and 1980s. The name Filtrona was adopted in 1979 and was also adopted by the Group of manufacturing companies that were demerged from Bunzl in 2005. In 2013, the Company changed its name to Essentra plc to reflect its diversification into industrial components. In November 2022, the successful filters and tapes divisions were sold to new owner Centaury Management Limited. The business is now rebranded as Filtrona again, a compelling name with a rich legacy of innovation and supported by strong industry partnerships.
