Humans love things that go boom, but pets–not so much. So, this 4th of July, there’s CBD tinctures to try that may help them keep chill during what could be week-long fireworks shows, due to the sonically challenging holiday’s midweek schedule.
According to PetMD.com, “Cannabis oil can be used to treat seizures, nausea, stress, anxiety, arthritis, back pain, symptoms of cancer, and gastrointestinal issues, among other health conditions in dogs.” Based on anecdotal evidence, CBD can also be used with other pets including cats, horses, and potentially any mammals, since we all have endocannabinoid systems.

Scientific evidence of the effects of CBD (and hundreds of other cannabis-derived compounds) is hard to come by, however, due to marijuana’s status as a Schedule 1 drug and the resulting federal prohibition on cannabis-derived products.
“I have been surprised by how many pets in my practice have greatly benefited from cannabis and its anxiety-relieving properties,” wrote Dr. Angie Krause, DVM, for the her Boulder Holistic Vet blog. “It is very important to note that dogs and cats with anxiety should use cannabis with high levels of CBD. THC, the psychoactive component of the marijuana plant, should be avoided in pets with anxiety as it can worsen symptoms.”
Pet owners should always consult their veterinarian before starting any alterative medicinal regime, but veterinarians are unable to prescribe medical marijuana to their patients.
CBD-infused pet formulations are readily available online because they contain CBD from hemp oil, which comes from a cannabis variety low in tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. So, there’s no worry about your pet getting high; the tinctures featured here all have less than 0.3 percent THC.
Cannabis experts say the benefits of CBD are enhanced by including complimentary compounds–terpenes and cannabinoids (other than THC)–to produce a synchronous “entourage effect.” Experts and pet healthcare professionals do recommend to make sure all products are clearly labeled and even to purchase products infused with hemp oil from U.S.-grown plants, in much the same way pet experts say to avoid some treats from markets without strict pet food regulation.
