OLYMPIA, Wash. – Under newly adopted House Bill 1095, students who are registered users of medical marijuana in Washington state now will be permitted use of their medications on public school campuses.

Introduced by State Rep. Brian Blake, the bill states, “Upon the request of a parent or guardian of a student who meets the requirements of [authorized use by a health care professional], the board of directors of a school district shall adopt a policy to authorize parents or guardians to administer marijuana concentrates to a student for medical purposes while the student is on school grounds, aboard a school bus, or attending a school-sponsored event.”

Further language is included to protect “School district officials, employees, volunteers, students, and parents and guardians acting in accordance with the school district policy” from being “arrested, prosecuted, or subject to other criminal sanctions” and from “civil or professional consequences.”

The bill was signed into law April 30 by Washington state Governor Jay Inslee, who, before signing the bill said, “Currently children who need medical marijuana… have to leave school. They’re missing valuable time.”
