The Nevada Legislative Counsel Bureau says that marijuana lounges are already legal in Nevada.
When Nevada residents approved Question 2 and the use of recreational marijuana, one issue seemed to be overlooked. With all of the tourists pouring into the state (especially Las Vegas), where exactly could visitors go to use the marijuana they just legally purchased?
Calls have been prominent for new laws permitting marijuana lounges or some other approved space tourists could go to. As it turns out, marijuana lounges are already legal.
The Nevada Legislative Counsel Bureau says that the current laws do not prohibit city or county governments from allowing public lounges or designated areas for marijuana use.
“Allowing regulated social use areas is a good solution that recognizes cannabis consumers’ rights to congregate just like alcohol drinkers can in bars while also protecting nonconsumers’ rights not to inhale secondhand smoke,” said Marijuana Majority founder Tom Angell, according to The Hill. “It should be a no brainer, especially in tourist towns like Las Vegas where visitors don’t have private residences they can go back to imbibe.”
Nevada Sen. Tick Segerblom, a vocal supporter of recreational marijuana agreed with Angell.
“We’re going to really market this thing around the world,” Segerblom said.
Nevada could be laying the groundwork for other states if they open up marijuana lounges. So far, no state that has legalized recreational marijuana is currently permitting lounges or designated public spaces for consumption.
