Air Force Warns Members Against CBD Use Fearing Positive Drug Tests

Although CBD does not produce a psychedelic state on its own, members of the United States Air Force should refrain from using these products, according to military brass.

Some products have tested positive for higher than acceptable THC levels, and even non-daily use of products with trace amounts of the cannabinoid may lead to a positive drug test. This can put military personnel’s service in serious jeopardy.

“It’s important for both uniformed and civilian Airmen to understand the risk these products pose to their careers,” said Major Jason Gammons, Air Force Office of The Judge Advocate General spokesperson. “Products containing unregulated levels of THC can cause positive drug tests, resulting in the same disciplinary actions as if members had consumed marijuana.”

Although cannabis and CBD are viewed favorably by most Americans, Air Force Instruction 90-507 explicitly states that service members must always maintain their readiness for duty. It cites studies indicating even hemp-derived products can contain detectable levels of THC. “Failure to comply with the mandatory provisions of this paragraph by military personnel is a violation of Article 92, UCMJ,” the instruction states. “Violations may result in administrative disciplinary action without regard to otherwise applicable criminal or civil sanctions for violations of related laws.”

Major Gammons does not attack the efficacy of CBD directly but is concerned that members may not always know exactly what they are ingesting. “The important point for Airmen to consider is the level of uncertainty for these products,” he said. “We want to ensure we arm them with the facts so they can make informed decisions and not inadvertently jeopardize their military careers.”

The U.S. Navy issued a similar announcement over the summer. In a release, Navy leadership said CBD products have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), therefore, they are off-limits to sailors. However, an exception was stated for anyone with a valid prescription for FDA approved CBD products such as Epidiolex.
