If you’re sitting there right now, thinking about travel and cannabis tourism destinations, you’re not the only one. It’s that time of year when thoughts turn to getting up, up, and away for vacations—and because of increased cannabis legalization in the U.S., the skies may actually be getting a little friendlier.
The Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) has also been thinking about cannabis-carrying travelers and, in April, stated on their Instagram:
“Verified: Are we cool? We like to think we’re cool. We want you to have a pleasant experience at the airport and arrive safely at your destination. But getting caught while trying to fly with marijuana or cannabis-infused products can really harsh your mellow.
“Let us be blunt: TSA officers DO NOT search for marijuana or other illegal drugs,” the post continued. “Our screening procedures are focused on security and detecting potential threats. But in the event a substance appears to be marijuana or a cannabis-infused product, we’re required by federal law to notify law enforcement.”
That is pretty blunt for a governmental regulatory agency and there was even an image of lush, green marijuana leaves attached. The post caused a flurry of attention from media and travel bloggers.
The Los Angeles Times reported on Sunday that “pot smuggling” has increased 166 percent since recreational legalization hit California. Travel blog ThePointsGuy.com gave tips for what to expect in various states and with international travel, noting that travelers should be aware of guidelines, which can vary widely from region to region. Of course, cannabis is still federally prohibited throughout the U.S.
Retailers in recreationally-legal tourist towns may want to post local cannabis use guidelines or offer an informational handout to visiting customers. If considering what kind of accessories to stock for summer, lockable, odor-proof bags along with a selection of discreet grinders, containers, and disposable, inexpensive, small-sized products might sell well if you have a lot of cannabis travel and tourism traffic.
Here’s a list of cool, on-the-go-gear perfect for summer retail:
