YORK, Pa. – Governor Tom Wolf (D-Pa.) is seeking to legalize recreational cannabis for adults in Pennsylvania. Wolf, along with Lt. Governor John Fetterman held a press conference to make the announcement. Fetterman was tasked with conducting a statewide listening tour to assess how legal adult-use cannabis could be implemented.
“The Lt. Gov. made good on his promise to visit all sixty-seven counties to hear from Pennsylvanians about whether or not they support the legalization of adult-use recreational marijuana in the state,” Gov. Wolf said. “And among the many who voiced their opinions, the majority supported legalization.”
Earlier in the year, Wolf cracked the door open for recreational cannabis. Now, it appears he is ready to walk emphatically through it.
“I said in the past that I didn’t know if Pennsylvania was ready for this,” Wolf said. “I believe Pennsylvania is ready for this.”
Fetterman echoed the governor’s statement and after completing his tour feels Pennsylvania residents will support legalization.
“If you oppose the legalization of recreational marijuana, you are in the minority in Pennsylvania,” Fetterman said.
Fetterman is calling for three key steps to get the ball rolling on legalization:
- He plans to ask the legislature to get a bill to the governor’s desk that decriminalizes non-violent and small cannabis-related offenses.
- He is also seeking a path to restorative justice through the expungement of past convictions of non-violent and small cannabis-related crimes.
- Fetterman is also calling on the General Assembly to seriously debate and consider the legalization of adult-use, recreational marijuana.
It seems most of Pennsylvania’s highest-ranking leaders are on board with Wolf’s plan. State Attorney General Eugene DePasquale has also announced his support for recreational cannabis legalization.
Wolf feels that, along with state residents, Pennsylvania can implement a successful recreational cannabis program.
“I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together, especially the criminal justice reforms I am proposing today, which will have an immediate positive influence on thousands of families across Pennsylvania.”
