When it comes to cannabis, the hype engine is always humming. Consumers are constantly looking for the latest drop while growers hope to develop a strain that becomes the hot new thing and puts their brand in high demand.

For commercial cultivators wondering what to plant next, the answer depends on numerous factors. Some choose to stick with tried and true varieties known for big yields, while others gamble on a pheno-hunt favorite. Growing for extraction is also a much different game than growing for flower dripping with bag appeal.

To help predict the year ahead, we spoke with analysts and breeders to discover the hot strains of 2025. From buzzy debuts to old favorites, here’s what they predict will make a splash this year.

What’s next?

For many buyers, it’s all about the new-new. A large number of consumers are consistently shopping for new flavors, especially if they have star power behind them.

Cookies mogul Berner recently said the brand’s latest collab with Ridgeline Farms, Blackberry Caviar, is “the next big thing.” The cross of Ridgeline’s award-winning Lantz and Grape Gas is highly anticipated, with social media hype running high.

The highly decorated Whitethorn Rose will also continue to be popular among growers seeking washers. The variety’s unique terpene profile and rich resin production make it ideal for hash producers. Creators Huckleberry Hill Farms historically have kept the genetics under strict lock and key but have begun licensing the strain out to approved partners. Additionally, a cross of Whitethorn Rose and Huckleberry’s Paradise Pine is available in feminized and regular seeds via Tangled Roots.

It may be the year for triploids and autos

Plenty of growers like to jump on the hype train—not just for exotic flavors but for cutting-edge science, as well. Genetics heavy hitters Humboldt Seed Company has something for both. For a taste of what’s fresh, the company’s Moon Fog and Purpz remain big sellers, while the new Chicken N’ Wafflez has many intrigued.

Meanwhile, Humboldt Seed’s innovative Triploid OG Autoflower variety is gaining steam. Cultivators, particularly those growing at scale, appreciate the strain’s quick turnaround time. The fact that triploids are specifically bred to eliminate seed production ensures buds are potent and terpene-rich.

Wholesale experts predict triploids and autos will continue to be in high demand in 2025 and beyond. Based on sales data from autoflower seed house Fast Buds, it appears that prediction is turning into fact. Head of marketing Eugene Boukreev says crosses of fan favorites GG4 and GSC are the best-selling varieties of the year so far.

“I expect Cookies varietals to continue to impress,” said Boukreev. “It’s their impressive yield; these plants are resilient. They are more popular with growers this year than ever before.”

One may be surprised to hear that somewhat older strains are selling so well. It turns out that for many consumers, familiarity is the name of the game.

The classics never went out of style

According to data from Hoodie Analytics, the most popular strain in America is not the mega-hot Permanent Marker or Super Boof. Instead, it’s an old classic that pretty much everyone has had at one point or another.

“It’s Blue Dream across the board,” said Dani Castonguay, adding it’s “not even close” on both the coasts.

Castonguay added that in the South, Pineapple Upside Down Cake is coming for the crown. In the Midwest, Runtz is a close second. But when looking at nationwide stats, it’s all Blue Dream.

Boukreev said sales of other timeless flavors like Sour D and LSD25 are also starting to climb. Over at Zamnesia, classic landrace cultivars like Colombian Gold and Panama Red are enjoying a renaissance.

“I see growers migrating back to timeless flavors,” said Boukreev. “I see their sales increasing. The reliability of these cultivars makes them last the test of time.”

What’s worth growing next?

Whether seeking the next blockbuster strain, testing out innovative varieties, or relying on old favorites, cultivators have plenty of routes to take in 2025. For those deciding which way to go, it’s best to spend time examining the demands of individual markets and communicating with retail buyers to determine their needs. Growers can also choose to take a risk and blaze a path of their own, but in a volatile market, most commercial operators will likely want to stay the course to ensure stability.
