DENVER – As food costs have spiked 11.4% this year, Colorado food banks are struggling to stock shelves and are serving more people now than during the pandemic. To help ensure that all Coloradans are able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner, Native Roots, a vertically-integrated Colorado dispensary chain with 20 locations, is hosting a “Danksgiving” food drive November 9-24 in partnership with four local nonprofit organizations across Colorado. They set a food drive goal of 5,000 pounds of food, which will be distributed to those in need during the holiday season.

Danksgiving partners include We Don’t Waste, a Denver-based nonprofit collecting unused food and distributing it to the city’s most vulnerable; The K.I.M. Foundation, a nonprofit assisting cancer survivors and supporting local communities with food; Emergency Family Assistance Association, a Boulder-based nonprofit working to ensure Boulder County families have access to food, housing and other resources; and Care & Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, a food bank distributing donations to 282 food pantry partners across 31 counties. Native Roots will also donate $1 from every transaction at all locations on Giving Tuesday, November 29, to We Don’t Waste.

“Rising food costs have made it a challenge for Coloradans to get the nutritious food they need to grow, thrive, and stay healthy,” says Liz Zukowski, Policy & Public Affairs Manager at Native Roots. “Now, more than ever, we want to support our communities by hosting food drives and boosting resources where they are needed most. Everyone should enjoy a special meal surrounded by loved ones during the holidays.”

Anyone can donate non-perishable food items at Native Roots’ 20 locations throughout Colorado starting November 9th through Thanksgiving. Suggested items include canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned soup, canned fish, peanut butter, pasta, canned beans and brown or white rice.
