Mexican authorities will legalize the sale of certain infused foods, drinks, cosmetics, medicine, and other products early next year.
Mexico is continuing a trend of reforming its marijuana laws. In June, medical marijuana was approved by authorities. Now, Reuters is reporting that there are plans for many more marijuana-infused products to be made legal in 2018.
The new regulations should be made available within days according to Arturo Tornel, spokesman for Cofepris, a federal health agency in Mexico. Tornel says the new products could be on sale as early as next month.
Tornel also told Reuters that the new products will be imported from outside nations, at least at initially. In the future, companies may have the opportunity to create their own products with cannabis flower. However, the flower would still come from other countries.
Mexico has had massive problems with drug cartels. Large-scale grow centers could attract the attention of criminals. Perhaps importing the marijuana could help alleviate some security concerns. BBC estimates that over 200,000 people in Mexico have either been murdered or have disappeared since Mexico declared war on the cartels in 2006.
There has been a lot of momentum for marijuana reform in Mexico. Could they be slowly moving toward legalization as they try to weaken the cartel’s influence?
