“Korova” means cow in Russian and is used as a slang term for cannabis in Croatia. Powers also took inspiration for the company’s name from the novel A Clockwork Orange: Alex and his fellow troublemakers visit the Korova Milk Bar and consume a drink called a Moloko Plus. Real-life variations of the drink often contain barbiturates. “For us, it is an homage to one of our favorite films and also a nod to using foods to deliver medication,” said Powers.
This edible maker certainly uses food to deliver quality medication. The company’s recipe for success start with the recipes themselves. “Our products consist of only quality ingredients in their most basic forms: flour, sugar, butter. We’re not trying to re-invent the wheel—just make a consistent product with a classic recipe,” Powers said.
The consistency pays off for patients who have developed high tolerances. For a novice, some of Korova’s products may be a bit potent. However, for long-time medicators in need of relief, Korova may offer, as the packages state, “unrivaled potency.” According to Powers, “Our 500mg and 1,000mg THC cookie and brownie bars are our most popular products by far.”
The cannabis industry has taken notice of Korova: More than 600 dispensaries stock the company’s products. Korova products have won multiple awards, including a High Times Cannabis Cup for best edible.
While awards and recognition are nice, Powers said Korova has its sights set on a larger goal: providing consumers with accurate information. Each package is labeled with detailed nutritional facts and dosage information. “Some of the mislabeling issues we’ve seen over the past five years have been outrageous,” Powers said.
Consumers demand safe products with accurate labels. Korova is cooking up a supply to meet that demand.
